Setting the scene
Japan’s demand for solar power continues to soar, creating ample opportunities to connect communities with reliable sources of clean energy. In Kitaibaraki City, BayWa r.e. was tasked with design, development, turnkey construction, and technical management of a 57.8-hectare solar park: our Isohara project.
With close to 500 MW in renewables projects delivered across APAC since 2015, our track record in Asia speaks for itself. In 2020, we finished an 11.9 MWp solar farm in Izumi, proving that we can also succeed in the Japanese market.

Meeting the challenges
Building on our success in Izumi, we combined our broad global experience with specific local knowledge. Construction of the solar park in Kitaibaraki began in March 2019, and the project proved to be able to withstand future challenges.
Upon completion, Isohara was capable of producing 34.98 MWp. That’s enough to power around 15,000 Japanese homes for a full year.

The results
The Isohara site was completed and sold in 2021. D&D Solar GK, a combined venture between Osaka Gas and the Development Bank of Japan, also purchased our Izumi site. The move is part of Osaka Gas’ plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
BayWa r.e. is continuing to help meet rising public demand for solar power in Japan. We’re already busy developing a 50 MWp facility in Kobe, Hyogo. As our largest project in Japan so far, it further demonstrates a solid commitment to this critical energy market.
BayWa r.e. has gone from a 11.9 MWp project to a 34.98 MWp, and now to a 50 MWp in Kobe. It demonstrates we’re serious about making meaningful contributions to Japan’s energy transition. The efficiency with which this park was completed is encouraging to see.
