Solar Power for Universities
01—
Setting the scene
With a goal to generate 50 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2050, the Malaysian Government held the country’s first ever largescale solar auction early in 2017.
BayWa r.e, together with the Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) and local renewable energy developer Sun Energy Ventures Sdn. Bhd, took part as a consortium.
Testament to the collaborative approach undertaken, the auction was a success with a 5 MWp solar project secured together with a Power Purchase Agreement with the government for 21 years.

Meeting the Challenge
The solar plant will cover a 20-acre area and is located within the campus of the Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) in the state of Perlis’ Royal Capital, Arau.
Key to success was the collaborative approach with our project partners. Together, we were able to put forward a fully optimised and cost-effective solution that maximised the site’s location.
BayWa r.e. is one of a select few companies that has the technical expertise, capability and financial standing to successfully deliver this type of project, almost anywhere in the world. Together with the local knowledge and expertise of our project partners, it proved a winning combination.
Being located at the University, the project also created a great opportunity to educate students about solar energy installations. So, we've installed a test system within the university grounds to provide students with a real-time learning experience.

Getting the result
The combination of our global project development expertise, together with a collaborative working approach with local project partners, proved the key to our success in Malaysia’s first ever auction.
And through our commitment to help educate and inform communities, wherever we work in the world, the University’s students are now learning about the benefits of renewable energy and how it works.
The solar farm began operating in March 2018 and with further auctions being planned we are now busy preparing for the next round.
BayWa r.e. has enabled Malaysia to take a great step forward in realising its renewable energy ambitions. This is also a fantastic opportunity to showcase our green credentials to our students and educate the Malaysia’s future workforce on the benefits and operations of solar installations.
