Self-sufficient thanks to photovoltaics

Setting the scene
Founded in 1995 as a three-person team, KW automotive GmbH now has more than 200 employees at five locations worldwide.
Working in an energy intensive industry, KW automotive wanted to reduce its energy costs while also driving forward its sustainability agenda. The answer? The chassis experts turned to BayWa r.e. and a rooftop PV system for its facility at Fichtenberg, Baden-Wuerttemberg.

Meeting the Challenge
We installed a PV system on two of the KW automotive production halls. From the start of the planning phase to the commissioning of the final construction stage, just two months passed.
As the main contractor, we were responsible for all planning, construction and installation work, as well as procuring the PV components and a new transformer compact station for feeding in and drawing energy.
We optimised the existing flat rooftop area and positioned the PV system to fully optimise the output generation of the solar panels.

Getting the result
Since October 2016, the system has been generating electricity for the 23,000 m2 production and warehousing facilities with a total capacity of 579 kWp, meeting around 44 percent of the business’ energy demand.
This is helping KW automotive to significantly reduce its energy costs while reducing its CO2 emissions by over 315,500 kg per year.
Our team of experts has since been taking care of all the necessary technical operations management requirements of the system, to consistently generate the highest levels of output.
The switch to our own private consumption system from BayWa r.e. has paid off for us in every way. Thanks to the rooftop system, we were able to cut our electricity costs by about 44 percent in comparison with the previous year and, as an added benefit, contribute to climate protection.
