Building renewables into global industrial real estate
01—
Setting the scene
One of the world’s leading property groups, responsible for developing, owning and managing modern logistics facilities, warehouses and business parks, Goodman, believes in the importance of long-term sustainability goals.
With close to 400 properties worldwide, renewable energy forms a critical element in the company’s ambitious plan for its global real estate portfolio. The Group has recently renewed its targets – aiming for a total installed rooftop solar capacity of 400MW by 2025. This in turn helps many of its own Fortune100 and RE100 clients to achieve their own sustainability targets.
This move is evidence of Goodman’s commitment towards tackling climate change, and to its goals of using 100% renewable energy and to be carbon neutral by 2025.

Meeting the Challenges
BayWa r.e. has been helping Goodman to take a step closer to achieving its renewable energy targets by delivering large-scale rooftop solar projects across the Netherlands and Germany.
However, not content with just powering its own buildings, Goodman wanted each project to produce more clean electricity than the sites would consume. This meant that the excess could be sold to the grid, enabling them to become a prosumer and create an additional income stream.
BayWa r.e. was able to draw on its long-standing expertise in delivering projects of this nature to design and deliver schemes that worked across countries and that matched the client’s requirements.
We were also able to ensure that in each case, the project aligned with regional and national policy and regulations.

The result
BayWa r.e. has, to date, delivered a total of 11 installations across the Netherlands and Germany, with a combined capacity of around 10 MWp. For the Netherlands, we delivered two projects in Oosterhout, one of which has a capacity of 1.9 MWp and is the second largest PV rooftop we installed in 2020, as well as one of the largest PV rooftop systems in the whole Nijmegen region. In Germany, multiple rooftops were equipped with state-of-the-art PV systems.
Our team provided EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) as well as operation and maintenance services, ensuring that each system delivered the desired output while at the same time granting maximum efficiency. The team was one of the first to achieve SolarPower Europe’s operations and best practices accreditation.
The installations are not only reducing Goodman’s CO2 emissions, but are also helping the company achieve BREEAM certification. BREEAM is the world’s leading sustainability assessment method for master-planning projects, infrastructure and buildings.
As a leading owner, developer and manager of industrial real estate globally, we recognise the role we have to play in tackling climate change. BayWa r.e. is helping us make progress on this important journey by turning our plentiful roof space into cutting edge solar energy systems.
