Sold earlier this year to German insurance group, Talanx AG, the solar farm has a 12-year PPA with Statkraft. It’s located just 3km away from the original Don Rodrigo solar park (174MWp) which was the first subsidy-free utility-scale PV plant in Europe.
Dr. Benedikt Ortmann, Global Director of Solar Projects at BayWa r.e. commented. “Our success in developing major subsidy-free solar projects, not only here in Spain, but also in other European countries, demonstrates that grid parity is a reality. There is no doubt that solar will play a crucial and leading role in the energy transition.”
Don Rodrigo 2 will generate 100GWh of solar power every year – enough to power around 30,000 Spanish households. BayWa r.e. will continue to operate and maintain the solar farm on behalf of the Talanx Group.
BayWa r.e. has also welcomed news that the Spanish government is set to approve ambitious new climate law that will pave the way for at least 70% of electricity needs to come from renewables as soon as 2030.
“The Spanish energy minister has made it clear that the energy transition will become a driving force to generate economic activity and employment in the short term, in way that fits Spain’s needs in the medium and longer term,” said Benedikt Ortmann.
“BayWa r.e. intends to continue to play a pivotal role in the energy transition, and to that end, we’re continuing to look for new solar and wind projects and developers to work with in both Spain and Portugal.”
